Identifying Factors Contributing to the Motorcycle Crash Severity in Pakistan

Motorcycle is a popular mode of transportation in many developing countries, including Pakistan. Since the last decade, registered number motorcycles Pakistan has increased by six times, constituting 74% total vehicles. However, limited research efforts have been made to investigate motorcycle-related safety issues Thus, relationship between potential risk factors and injury outcomes motorcycle crashes still unclear country. This study, therefore, established random parameter logit model examine associated with severity. The analysis based on two years (2014–2015) data collected through road traffic injuries surveillance system from Karachi city, results indicate that summer season, weekends, nighttime, elderly riders, heavy vehicle, single-vehicle collisions are positively fatalities, while presence pillion passengers motorcycle-to-motorcycle negatively fatalities. More importantly, specific context Pakistan, morning hours, young female whose clothes stuck wheel significantly increase fatal outcomes. Based findings, countermeasures improve discussed, such as strict enforcement control motorcyclists' risky behavior speeding, provision exclusive lanes, education passengers. findings this study would awareness can be used policymakers enhance well other countries similar situations.
